PM Surya Ghar: free electricity from your own roof

The scheme pays a direct subsidy of up to ₹78,000 on a rooftop solar system, transferred straight to your bank account. There is no income limit. This page explains what you get, whether you qualify, and exactly how to apply.

The process

How to apply, step by step

The whole process runs online and typically takes 30 to 45 days from application to subsidy.

    Register on the portal

    Sign up on the national portal with your Aadhaar, mobile number and email.

  2. 02

    Enter your electricity usage

    Add your monthly consumption in units. The portal recommends a system size from it.

  3. 03

    Choose an empanelled vendor

    Select an MNRE-approved installer working in your area.

  4. 04

    Upload your documents

    Identity proof, a recent electricity bill, bank details and a photograph of the roof.

    DISCOM approval

    Your electricity board carries out a feasibility check on the connection.

    Installation

    The vendor installs the panels, mounting structure and inverter.

    Net meter installed

    The DISCOM inspects the system and fits a bi-directional meter.

    Subsidy transferred

    The subsidy reaches your bank account by direct transfer.

Eligibility

Who can apply

You can apply if

  • You are an Indian citizen
  • You own the property
  • You have a valid electricity connection
  • Your roof is structurally sound and largely unshaded
  • There is no income limit — the scheme is open to everyone

You cannot apply if

  • You are a tenant without the owner applying
  • You have already claimed a rooftop solar subsidy
  • There is no valid DISCOM connection at the property
  • The property is disputed or unauthorised
