How it works

Net metering explained: how selling power back actually works

12 February 2026 · 5 min read · SolarSight Team

What net metering is, what it does to your bill, and how to apply for it.

What it means

Net metering connects your solar system to the grid in both directions. When your panels produce more than you use, the surplus flows to the grid. When they produce less, you draw from it.

What it does to your bill

At the end of the month you are billed on the net — units drawn minus units exported. Export more than you draw and the credit carries into the following month.

How to apply

Apply to your local DISCOM, online or at the office. After approval they install a bi-directional meter. This normally happens alongside your subsidy application.
